Three basic styles of the piano bench include the adjustable, common duet style and the double piano bench which is available in adjustable or non adjustable seating.

Many musicians choose the adjustable style bench because it offers the ultimate in comfort and provides variable seating when movable seat height is required. Reasons to vary seat height include the height of the player and variances in individual instruments. The adjustable piano bench is available with an optional music storage compartment and can also be purchased with leather or vinyl seat covering.

A duet piano bench is the most common bench and is often purchased when the consumer want to replace an existing bench, as many acoustic piano were originally equipped with this style. A duet bench is most often all wood construction with a padded top or a plain wood top. One of the popular featured among pianist and other musicians is the large music storage compartment where books and other accessories can be stored out of sight. Bench leg styles are often available in round, curved or tapered, finished in satin or high polished colors.

The double piano bench is commonly used by teachers and performers when dual seating is required. As a teaching aid, the tutor or instructor can sit beside the pupil and observe the music as well as hand coordination and posture. The double bench is also popular among pianists who are playing four hand piano repertoire at the same piano, there is a great wealth of piano literature for this form and quite popular in piano performance.
