subject: Make Your Small Room Appear Bigger [print this page]

Not everybody lives in those spacious houses that you see in many home decor magazines and pictures. Many of us live in "regular" houses with regular sized and often even small sized rooms. If you are looking to make your small space appear bigger, here are a few tips and tricks that will be of immense help.

You don't want to clear out so much that your room looks empty. You may have some things stored away that you have been putting off unpacking until you have more room. Now is the time to get them out. You may also want to buy a couple of new things to go in the small room.

If you still have things that need to be unpacked you may be hesitant to bring it out after clearing the clutter. So what is the best choice in this situation? That depends on how you want to decorate your area. First you must choose a color. You will need to choose colors that are of the same color tone. This helps the small spaces look large. Once you choose your colors go shopping for the furniture that will fit in that room with the colors you have selected.

An area rug is a nice addition to a small room for several reasons. You can use an area rug to help keep the room warm, to serve as a focal point, or to enhance the ambience in the room. The tough decision will be choosing which area rug you want to use.

Decide what type of area you want in terms of pile. If you choose a shaggy rug you want to get one that is in the color that you like. These are still popular rugs so there shouldn't be any problems in finding the right color. Depending on the humidity in your area you may want to choose a Flokati. Choose a larger size rug if you are placing it under any furniture or your bed.

And finally, to aid in that quest for the appearance of more space, one of the best things you can do is invest in some good lighting. The more light in the room; the better. If you find you do not have enough sources for natural light, then artificial light will do the trick just as well. Also consider using spotlights to highlight objects at opposite ends of the room. This will further add to create the illusion of distance between these various focal points and therefore make the room look bigger.
