subject: What Realistic And Permanent Results Can I Expect From Liposuction? [print this page]

Liposuction is not a magic surgeryLiposuction is not a magic surgery. Results will vary from person to person, and will depend a lot on how you yourself treat your body. There are some results that you can expect from the surgery however. Liposuction will make a difference in the subcutaneous fat content in the area worked on, and is done well, should improve the shape and aesthetics of the body. How permanent these results will be will depend mostly on you.

The results of surgery will not be immediately apparent. There is usually swelling from the operation for at least a few weeks after surgery. The final results of the procedure will usually be seen from between one to three months after the surgery. Depending on the procedures used, and the amount of surgery undergone, it may take up to 12 weeks to see ultimate results.

The new shape that lypoplasty will produce will remain more or less the same, even if you gain some weight after the surgery. Many people mistakenly think that liposuction is a weight loss surgery, when it is truly more of a cosmetic surgery. The focus in the procedure is not to remove the most fat possible, but to improve the look and shape of the body. Excessive amounts of weight gain will counteract much of the procedure, but if a steady and healthy weight is maintained the results are fairly permanent.

The fat cells that are removed during liposuction do not grow back. The removal is permanent. However, new fat cells can develop if you gain a significant amount of weight after the surgery. Fat is stored in places where the most fat cells are already present. Because of this, weight gain after surgery will first appear on the areas that were not operated on. Fat will begin to build in the areas that received surgery if weight gain continues.

Age will also affect the results of surgery. While liposuction results are permanent, they cannot slow or change the aging process. As the body ages the places where fat is deposited change, and this will continue to occur. Therefore, the results of the procedure may become less pronounced throughout the years, but if you maintain the ideal weight (which would be the weight you were just after the surgery was performed) your results should remain optimal.

Liposuction does not erase fat forever. While it does remove the fat cells permanently, you still need to watch your weight in order to keep the ideal shape of your body. If you take care with your body the cosmetically pleasing results of the surgery can be permanent.
