Part 34 of 73
I sigh deeply. "I think this is the first time I have ever told this story." Xaba is still silent.
He is just looking at me strangely. At some point he lights his pipe. He does that when he is thinking deeply. "I learned a lot that night, Xaba. I had no idea what inspired me or convinced me to make my decision. I just knew that it came from deep inside me.
Who you are and how you live, the really important things, come from inside. The stuff outside will never give you that satisfaction. Values, I think they call them. Maybe I found a secret that night, when I chose Values instead of Pride. The values had not crystallized yet, and yet they were there. They were part of me. Formed through the years. To this day I am not sure if it might have been a stupid decision. And yet I have not had a single regret. On the contrary, in a way it set me free."
"What happened after that?" Xaba asks. "I don't know. My life went on. I simply chose not to continue living and thinking at that level. No hard feelings, no anger. I was really just sorry for them all. So much left to learn! Maybe they would never learn. It was no longer my playing field. Maybe that was the special secret. I don't know."
