Xaba does not say anything while I am talking away. What does he know about Student Council elections in any case? Life was simpler for him. "It must have been about two hours later, or at least that is what it felt like, when they called me into the office. 'We have reached a decision,' the chairman said. My eyes darted wildly through the room. 'We have decided that you should continue,' he said.
I looked at each one in turn. Some passed under my gaze as if they were non-existent. I felt a little relieved at the decision, but I also felt sorry for some of them. 'Thank you,' my voice croaked. Tears and bitterness threatened to overwhelm me. 'I also made a decision out there,' I said. 'I have been thinking a great deal and have decided not to continue as chairman.' I can't remember exactly what else I said that night, Xaba. Something along the lines of: 'Maybe you will understand one day that what you are anxiously searching for is really insignificant. There are more important things on life's journey, things that are more fundamental, deeper and more spiritual than what you are running after now.
'I felt badly for the one or two old hands who, like me, could have retained office and now no longer had a chance. Good guys. As for the rest, I just felt sorry for them."
