Part 28 of 73

'Our orders are great,' he said. 'We are going to mess around north of Mupa and Evale until they notice us, and then they will know all about us.'

There were two brigades, mechanized brigades, north of us and all we needed to do was to stir trouble until they arrived. We played on the edge, Xaba, on the edge I tell you! But we were good at it. If only they had known! If they had only known!

"After the helicopters dropped us off that night, we walked a long way. All night long the dogs were barking as we walked. My backpack was so heavy I did not dare to put it down. Just the water alone was more than twenty litres. A ten minute rest. I stood with my back against a Mopanie tree, my pack pulling me down backwards. Bending forward, I flipped the pack up high on my back and rested my arms on my knees. For a moment the blood flowed freely through my arms. Everyone was having a hard time. Too quickly the ten minutes' rest passed and we continued into the dark night. "For an hour before the first light, we lay down. At dawn the horizon glowed ominously, almost as if it knew

Early that morning we could clearly see the signs that we were surrounded. All around us they were moving. . Our leader took the decision to break through and shot two men dead in the road nearby.
