subject: How To Make Your Long Distance Relationship Succeed [print this page]

When it comes to love, it really isn't always a small world, after all. But for those willing to literally go the distance for a relationship with someone far away, there are things you can do to make it work, because it absolutely can.

The first thing to think off is that, if you and your partner are willing to even consider the idea of being exclusive while not able to see each other regularly, there is already potential for a successful long term relationship. This still doesn't mean that it will necessarily turn out as you hoped, but if you put in the effort and follow these tips, the relationship can survive and thrive despite the distance.

We Have The Technology.

In 2010 you can see and talk to people a million different ways no matter how far apart you are geographically. Use video chat and ask your love one onto Skype dates. Go on instant messenger and have a music swap with your guy or gal (and send them only music that will make them think of and miss you!) Text or call and make sure you connect with them every day. (You should also be sure that the burden of making contact is pretty equal, because the person who barely communicates may be losing interest in the relationship.)

In My Dreams, I'm Christmassing With You.

...Or Hanukkahing, or Valentine's Daying, or whatever the occasion may be. Make sure your birthday gifts to your lover get to them on time and are extra thoughtful. Record a "Happy ___" video and send it to them, or send cards for even the most unimportant holidays. The holidays are a time for us to let people know how much we care, so don't hesitate here!

Have A Little Faith.

Don't cling to your partner, stalk them online or obsess about whether or not they're cheating. They'll find this clinginess annoying, or may even thing that you're only suspicious because you would do something untrustworthy.

Have Your Own Life.

We're not saying to give that new hottie the eye if you want this relationship to work! but do stuff on your own, with your friends and in your area so that you always have great news for your boyfriend or girlfriend about your latest endeavours. It will give you something to talk about, and remind them how awesome (and worth the long distance relationship) you are.
