subject: The Benefits Of The Legal Herbal Alternative [print this page]

Weed is just one of the many names given to a controversial drug whose existence continues to be the subject of debate amongst medical professionals and law enforcement agencies world wide. Other names for this divisive substance include marijuana, cannabis, ganja, pot, hemp, and grass.

Weed is one of the many ways to prepare the leaves and seeds of the Cannabis plant. Known to be an active ingredient in many psychoactive drugs, the Cannabis plant and its many preparations have been around for centuries. Their use has even been cited in many cultures for both recreational and religious purposes.

Generally considered to be illegal in many countries, weed is beginning to gain attention as a legal form of medication. The legality of weed has been the bone of contention between law enforcement and the supporters of the motion to completely legalize weed for as long as anybody can remember. There are modern medical studies that suggest that weed does have medicinal applications. Doctors prescribe medicinal marijuana to AIDS patients who do not respond well to conventional medication. Other medical conditions where marijuana has alleged medicinal benefits include multiple sclerosis, lupus, cancer, and glaucoma.

In places where weed is conditionally legal, medicinal marijuana can only be purchased in amounts below the prescribed maximum according to state and federal law. Legal weed is beginning to gain a strong legion of supporters, not just from those seeking recreational herbal highs, but also from those who seek an alternative source of pain relief. Weed has also been reputed to help destroy brain tumor cells.

The active compound in weed is a psychoactive chemical known as THC, which directly affects the central nervous system. Those who use weed experience sudden mood swings, and many have described the sensation as mind-altering. If abused, weed can lead to addiction and more severe health problems. This is why in places where legal weed is available, it can only be purchased in small, regulated amounts.

While weed is generally illegal, and because those who wish to buy legal weed must have medical clearance to purchase, many have begun looking for alternatives to weed. Many alternative herbal substances pack the same potency as weed, but they do not contain THC.
