subject: The Pc / Mac Tug-of-war Has Been Escalating For Some Years Now. Can Microsoft Survive? [print this page]

What is going to happen to Microsoft when the younger generation goes out into the professional world?

Just about all young adults who are in college or are graduating from love Macs. Not only are they easy to use, the students find them to be a status symbol. These days, if you have a Mac, it says that you are cool and that you are upper class. Presently and for the past few years, having a Mac is as much as a fashion statement as it is a practical computer purchase. To put it in another perspective, Mac is the latest fashion trend whereas a PC is that bulky sweater your peculiar Aunt gave you a couple of years ago which is necessary wardrobe during the holidays.

The further the younger generation gets involved with and becomes more and more effective at using these computers, the more we are going to see a gradual shift in the business world regarding computer purchases. It's just a matter of time until companies will shy away from the PCs and upgrade to Mac computers. If students are buying PCs it is either because they are cheaper. Though, this is not so much the case anymore. Many PC users are learning that there is a high probability of having to replace a PC half way through their college career. Therefore, the students might as well buy a Mac in the first place and have it last them several years. The ROI speaks for itself. Even if a student requires special software for their field of study (engineering, biotech, etc.), these programs are no longer exclusive to the PC. The App Store has just about everything. Additionally, with the introduction of the iPad, Macs just got more affordable, hip and easy to transport.

When I go to meet with clients, lately, I have started to see companies shift to using to Macs as not only are they easier to use, but having these computers gives the impression that the firm is cutting edge and wealthy. Since Macs are actually only a few hundred dollars more expensive than the new HPs, this could become a scary trend that Microsoft will have to deal with. Also, Apple is now beginning to roll-out Apple made versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It is a nightmare to Microsoft, but Apple users may soon be able to forgo Microsoft software entirely.

Macs are now the new game in town to beat and Microsoft could die due to Apple's popularity. Macs are cool; PCs are prone to viruses. Microsoft used to stand for reliability and technological advancement, now it is perceived as 2nd place. At this point in time, it seems as if Microsoft needs a miracle to keep on going.
