subject: Gauging The Effectiveness Of Social Media Marketing [print this page]

If you are using social networking marketing effectively, the chances are you will have developed a regular base of readers to your blog. There are some ways you can ensure that your social network marketing is effective, and these vary from site to site. Let's take a look at some of the social networking sites and determine how each of them helps you gauge your effectiveness:

Twitter - Twitter can be a treasure trove of potential new readers. While your initial instincts may scream at you to head for "trending topics" there are better ways to tap into the significant marketing opportunities that are offered via Twitter - here are a few of them:

Do a search on a given topic - Let's assume your blog is about Multi Level Marketing and you want to see how users on Twitter view that topic. Go to the search feature on your home page and key in #MLM. When the search returns you will see how many posts have been made in a set period of time, including when the last post was made. Search results for MLM

This tells you that the last update was 10 minutes prior to your search being run. However, if you take a different approach and put in #SEO you will see results posted as little as 2 minutes before and clearly SEO results are stronger.

This means there are more people searching on Twitter for SEO than are searching for MLM's. These searches also aids you in determining your audience and gives you the chance to connect to people who will probably read your twitter feed.

Facebook - Facebook uses a different set of metrics than that used by Twitter. Your fan pages easily provide statistics that immediately shows how your page is doing. Simply scroll down the side until you see "insights" and you can see the quality of the content as well as the number of interactions on a given page. These metrics measure based on the number of people who visit your page and those who comment on your page. You can change this by promoting your Facebook Fan pages through other social networking sites or through more direct advertising of your Fan Pages. FaceBook does have a "pay per click" way of advertising to other Facebook users.

Social Bookmarking Sites

Social Bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon provides you very direct measurements of your interactions. Just click on your "favorites" (i.e. items you have posted) and you get an up to date "count" of how many other users have read your stumbled link. This method has a tendency to help satisfy our immediate needs. Stumble provides immediate results.

The more effectively you use social networking tools, the more successful you will be in spreading the word about what you have to offer. Always remember the potential for successful and effective social networking.
