"Why did you do it?" asks Xaba. "What?" I ask. "Join the Defense Force." "I had to."

"You didn't have to do anything," he says. "That is how it was," I say. "I don't understand," he says. "The world was different then, Xaba, very different. I had to do it. It was the right thing for me."

A long silence hangs in the air. "Aren't you being rather heartless?" I question Xaba. He does not reply, just looks at me. "One can't live one's life in another time," I say. "You taught me that lesson." "What lesson?" he wants to know. "Not to judge what others did in their time. I mean ten years ago, a hundred years ago, a thousand years ago. Those were not my times. My time is now. It is always now. Now is also your time, Xaba. We must use the time well, savour every moment of it. What do you think? Are we doing justice to the time we are in now?" "I think we are stuffing it up royally brother," says Xaba. "A royal stuff up."

"Maybe there is a secret here after all.
