"You cannot relive yesterday, brother," says Xaba. "You can only move on and you can only live in the moment." "You can make the past better," I say. "Today, yes," he says. "Today you can do the right thing, choose correctly, choose again."
For a long time there is silence between us. I feel as though we are talking in circles. Each of us is busy with his own thoughts, quietly conscious of the drone of the Land Rover's engine. "Maybe we have more control over the journey than we think," Xaba begins again. "It is so difficult when you are still young," I say to Xaba. "Are you looking for excuses?" Xaba says. "No, that is not true. Today I no longer allow other people's opinions to dictate my life. I have more freedom. I have made my choice. I have decided how to deal with my problems. I no longer allow other people's drivel to get me down." "You have become quite grown up," says Xaba. "I wish! I am getting old, man," I grumble. "That is your problem," he says. "You are living in another time. You still have a long way to go on your journey. It is not over yet."
"After this running experience, life was never the same again, Xaba. A new world burst open for me. I began to create my own reality, my own convictions. I began to play the game where I was supposed to, where I was meant to play." "How did you know where that was?" asks Xaba. "I didn't, but once I began playing the game I knew - this is the right place.
Life comes to you in abundance when you begin to play the game. That was probably the biggest spiritual revelation I have ever had." "What?" asks Xaba. "The day I understood that whatever I was meant to be is out there, waiting for me. Everything is already provided for, all the potential, the capacity. I just need to get there and move on. It's been out there all along.
Maybe this is the big secret?" I question. Xaba looks straight ahead and does not answer.
