subject: Considerations When Buying A Baby Carrier [print this page]

A baby carrier can be such a help to mom and dad's by giving them their hands free to do certain things while the child is still being held close to you. There are many places that sell baby carriages that come in different styles, functions, and types that will be of use to you and the baby.

When you are thinking about buying a baby carriage you should first think of a "soft front" baby carriage. This carrier will allow the child to have free movement of his or her legs while a safety harness keeps the safe in a fabric seat and crisscrossing harnesses for carrying a child on ones back. A child that sits in this carrier will be sitting upright close to the parent's chest. This feature will give a lot of carrying support to the parent that is actually carrying the baby. It is a great product for the baby since it is very comfortable, safe, and offers much limb movement freedom. It is also good because it distributes the weight well across the carriers back and it's designed for comfort.

"Slings" are becoming more popular these days for carrying an infant child. They're also called "wraps" and are made of an extensive band of fabric material that will distribute the baby's weight across your back but over one shoulder only. Here the baby could sling easily allowing for discreet nursing and they can be configured in a number of different positions that are suitable for infants as well as older babies and toddlers too. It is easy to put on and take off by merely sliding it over your head. Incidentally, newborns have a tendency to curl up in a fetal position when they are first placed in a baby sling. Use of the baby sling does not allow your infant to free his or her legs.

Another carrier you may wish to consider is a baby carrier known as a hip baby carrier. The name says it all even though straps do go over the shoulder and elsewhere on the body to encourage weight distribution and safety. However, the main weight and the baby are carried on the hip in a carriage. This carriage does have better weight limits and can carry an older toddler or infant that is heavier much better.

You can even find baby carrying backpacks! They look somewhat similar to that of a normal hiking backpack only that they are designed to carry babies. Not only do they carry babies safely and securely, but they also have added storage space so that the parent can store any baby items that they would need. You can store diapers, first aid, wipes, and other miscellaneous items that you will need when nursing a baby. In addition, you must know that this baby carrier does have a limitation. If the child cannot sit upright in the carrier by itself then it cannot be properly seated in this carrier. It should be perfect for a baby that is about six months or older.
