subject: Painting With Oils - What Do You Need? [print this page]

Oil painting is a wonderful way to express yourself, but is it hard to learn? Not really. Actually, if you want to creatively venture into the world of art, painting in oils is one of the easiest ways to do it. In this article we'll talk about what you need to learn in order to become good at it.

The most important thing that you must have, if you want to learn how to paint, is the willingness to learn. Make no mistake, there is a lot to be learned here. But don't worry, it's not as hard as some would have you believe. It just takes time and patience. Next, you will need some sort of lessons.

Every beginner needs lessons. You think you don't need any lessons? Good for you, however, I don't expect to see your works exhibited any time soon. Don't worry about money. Today you can get lessons very cheaply. Just think DVD. But no matter what sort of lessons you take, you do need them, you need guidance.

Yes, guidance is extremely important. Because learning how to paint is a step by step process, you need to know where you are and when to move on. And you must go one step at a time.

Why step by step? Because it's easier this way. There is quite a lot to learn - from mixing colors and how to setup your studio to perspective, composition, color theory and so on. Remember to always start with the basics. That is really something you don't want to skip.

You know, it's pretty easy for people who know something about painting to spot an amateur. Why? If you didn't take the time to learn about perspective, composition and stuff like that, it will show very obviously in your works. If you want to go beyond the amateur level, start learning.

So what do you need in order to start painting with oils? Apart from painting supplies, you need lessons. And remember, learning can be fun too.
