subject: Rugs For Decoration [print this page] There are so many ways that you can use a rug to make a statement. If a room is too large a rug can be used to separate several areas to have several unique areas. Use different colors, styles, and sizes to make the statement you want to make.
Each room should have its own distinct look and feel. In home decor, opposites attract. For example, floral designs go great with solid colors that are stable. Use small patterns to compliment large patterns.
If you want the furniture to be the focal point of the room, it is important the colors of the rug's patterns should complement the color of the furniture. Various patterns may be mixed if they are of the same general colors. In other words, subsume the rug's visual projection to that of the furniture.
If however, you'd like the rug to be the point of focus, you should make sure the rug has a bold design or pattern, but only if the furniture's color is solid and/or subdued. If the furniture's colors are pronounced, the rug's pattern can be of contrasting color to set it off differently from the furniture but the general color should still complement that of the furniture. The color will be the unifying element in the room's decoration.
If your focal point is an area such as the fireplace you will be able to compliment the fireplace by adding a warm tone rug that can be placed in front of the fireplace. Avoid placing more than one focal color in a rug or area or you may find that one color will compete with the other, throwing off the balance of the room you was trying to create.
There are other ideas to decorating with rugs:
1.) Light colored rugs make a room feel more spacious; darker colors or patterns make the room more cozy or warm.
2.) A different shaped rug can bring a totally different look to your room. Try round, hexagon, octagon, or oval.
3.) Depending on the room's general appearance, fringes on rugs can add an Oriental flair to a room. Be careful when vacuuming the fringe, though: do not use the vacuum brush or beater bar, both of which can damage the fringe fibers.
4.) Turn your worn out rugs into sofa pillows and add some style with tassels on the corners.
5.) Rugs are not just for floors; add a sense of flair to your walls by taking or nailing a colorful rug to the wall. You can easily sew a loop along the edge of the rug add a window rod and attach to window brackets.
Make use of your imagination when using rugs for decoration and you will seldom go wrong.
