Race board games are among the earliest board game invented which require each player to compete against each other and be the first player to attain the goal. The game involves moving pieces on the game board under definite game rules and the player who is able to bring the pieces at the goal, objective or end of the line dominates. Known of all race board games is Backgammon, also in the tables family, relies on luck and strategy of the player with its objective of eliminating opponent pieces. There are some race board games that are very complex and would depend on luck, tactics, and abilities however some are very simple and played only basing the movements on the dices number.

Helping out in Cooperative Board Games

When players work together to achieve a certain goal against the game or against one or two players, they are playing cooperative board games. It is game which focuses more on team cooperation over competition, either winning or losing as a group. The events in the game come at random when the game advances making it more challenging for the players. The Arkham The Scotland Yard, released in the 1980s, is a good example of these games. This game where players are portrayed as detectives, cooperate to track down another player depicting as a criminal in the streets of London. Arkham Horror, another game in the 1980s is about players who act as investigators who works together to protect H. P. Lovecraft's Massachusetts town of Arkham against aliens and monsters to enter through the gates and eventually close these portals. In 2000 other cooperative board games have been published like The Lord of the Rings, Shadows over Camelot, and Pandemic.

The Strategic Game of Chess

Chess is one of the oldest board games and can only accommodate two players. Every players goal is to checkmate the king piece of the opponent where it has no room for moving without being attacked or captured. The game consists of an 8 by 8 checkered game board with a total of 64 squares. Every player has 16 pieces for him to play the game which comprise of two rooks, eight pawns, two knights, one king, two bishops, and one queen. The players take alternate turns in moving their pieces and it should be noted that only one piece can be moved at a time with an exception on castling where movements of two pieces are allowed. It is a practice that the players with light colored pieces make the opening move and the corresponding piece can land on an empty square or on an enemy occupied provided that the piece can capture the opponents. The World Chess Federation has the task of maintaining the games rules and regulations.

Head Spinning Word Board Games

Word board games include games that are about words of different types such as crossword puzzle types, bluff word games, word search and many more. Scrabble is the most famous of all the word games and is played by most people worldwide. The game has been sold in 121 countries and with 29 versions in different languages. Each 2-4 players are given letter tiles which have values and are used to form words across and down similar to crossword puzzle on a game board with 15-by-15 grid of cells which only holds one tile. The succession of the game is determined by the player holding a letter closest to letter A goes first and follows in succession in a similar order. The words should conform to and can be found in a typical dictionary of the corresponding language used. Each players aim is to garner more points than the opponent. Word board game choices are Acronymble, Alfabet, The Da Vinci Code, and Mumble Jumble.
