subject: How To Avoid Common Mistakes When Choosing A College [print this page]

After finishing school, teenagers find themselves at a loss when they face the problem of choosing a college. It goes without saying that everyone wants to find the college that suits the requirements a hundred percent. College is a sacred place for academic and campus life of every student. In order not to enter academic purgatory, one should examine all possible options and select the best. There are a lot of pieces of advice what to do when choosing a college. Here are the tips about what one should avoid doing:

1.It is advised not to judge a college by someones subjective comments about it. Even if parents want their kid to enter some particular college, it is only up to the applicant to decide. Whenever it is possible search for objective relevant information about any college. Do not trust anyone at that.

2.The next thing one should avoid is following his/her brother, sister, boyfriend or girlfriend when applying to college. In other words, one should not enter a college to be close to his/her friends or relatives.

3.Do not be misled by the popularity of any college. Prestige of a college is not the indicator that it would fit anyones requirements. Moreover, the most prestigious colleges are usually the most expensive.

4.Another common mistake school graduates make is choosing a college with the best athletic teams. Is participating in college sports really the main objective in students life? For most of the students education is the main objective in college. So consider academic advantages of a college first and then proceed to investigating about athletic teams.

5.What is most important never choose a college judging by students parties. The opportunity to study and to hang out in college is very attractive. But the balance is inevitable to maintain. Always remember that education is prior!

Among minor mistakes that the applicants make are:

Opt for colleges close to his/her house;

Or, on the contrary, choose a college that is far from his/her house to escape from parental care;

Rely on circumstances or fate.

On the whole, choosing a college is difficult but fun. Discover the possible options and make the right choice!
