subject: An Overview Of Fuel Injection System [print this page] A fuel injector is nothing but an automatically monitored valve. Fuel injectors are part of mechanical system that injects fuel into the combustion chambers at regular interval. Fuel injectors are capable of opening and closing many times in a period of one second. In recent years carburetor was used for fuel delivery, but now fuel injectors have almost entirely replaced the carburetors.
Various Schemes or types of Fuel Injection
Let us discuss some of the injection schemes briefly:
Throttle-body Injector
Throttle body injection is the simplest kind of injection scheme. Like carburetors, throttle body injector is located on the top of the engine. Throttle body injectors are very much in resembles with carburetors except in its working. Like carburetors it does not have fuel bowl or metering jets. In this kind of injectors the fuel is directly transferred to all of the combustion chambers or throttle bores.
Continuous injection
Continuous injection, as the vary name suggest that there is a continuous flow of the fuel in the continuous injectors. The entrance of the fuel in to the cylinders or tube is controlled by intake valves. There is a continuous flow of fuel at variable rate in continuous injection.
Central port injection (CPI)
This injection scheme uses a special type of valves called poppet valves. Poppet valves are the valves used to manage the entrance and ejection of the fuel intake and exhaust fuel to the cylinder. It sprays fuel on each intake with the help of tubes attached to a central injector.
Multi-port or Multi point fuel injection
One of the more advanced injection type nowadays is termed asmulti point or multi port injection. It is a dynamic type of injection which contains a separate fuel injector for each cylinder. In multi port injection system, all the injectors spray fuel simultaneously without any delay. Sequential multi point injection is one of the most advanced mechanical setup, which allows each injector to spray the fuel instantly before the cylinder ignites. Hence, with the sequential multi port injection the driver will get a rapid response time.
Modern fuel injection scheme is quite a complex computerized mechanical system, which is not confined only to the fuel injectors. The whole process is supervised by a computer and different parts react according to the given instructions. There are a number of sensors sending the crucial information to the computer to be adapted. There are different sensors like controlling the flow of fuel to the monitoring of the level oxygen.
Though, the system is much more complicated but the working of the different parts is very prcised. It helps to control the oxygen level and fuel flow, help avoiding the unnecessary flow of the fuel in the engine. Fuel injector gives your vehicle the potential to perform with high level of accuracy.
