subject: How Gas Leak Detectors Are Used In Different Industries [print this page]

Gas leak detectors are without a doubt one of the most important pieces of equipment that you can use in any industry. There are a number of different types of gas leaks, some of which include combustible gas leaks, as well as carbon monoxide gas leaks. Both of these leaks are a problem which is why they each have their own detectors.

Sometimes a gas leak detector can be mounted on the ceiling, but in a factory environment this is not particularly useful. There could be many factors that would cause the smoke detector to go off, and chances are that these factors would repeat themselves often. If you feel that this is the case, then it would be a good idea to invest in a handheld gas detector.

These are useful, but they are limited in range. In order to use a portable gas detector properly you will need to be relatively close to the area you believe is leaking. In a way this is good, because you don't want your gas leak detector to go off when you are still ten feet away from the source. If you have ever worked in an industrial environment, you know that this would be a disaster.

Because of the limited range however, you may need to assign several teams to scan for gas leaks if you believe there is one. This can be difficult, but you need to make sure you assign people that you can trust. By doing this you will ensure that every possible action has been taken, no matter what the outcome of the investigation is. As far as the gas detectors go, you have quite a few different models to choose from.

First of all you have the electrochemical detectors. These bring the gasses into a membrane, and it is then oxidized. Through a complex, process, the detector is able to determine the concentration of gas. These are fairly easy to use, and they are utilized in many workplace environments.

Then you have Infrared Point Sensors, which is abbreviated as IR. These utilize radiation to determine whether or not there is a gas leak. The amount of radiation absorbed will help to determine the existence and extensiveness of the gas leak in question.

These are two of the best types of gas leak detectors on the market. Something to take into consideration is that many of these gas leak detectors are fairly cheap, but that doesn't meant that they should be considered. In other words, you get what you pay for, and what you pay for may not be enough. That being said, it is important to make sure you get the best gas leak detector on the market, simply because it could spell success or complete disaster for your business.
