It is far from an easy task to persuade Google to rank your website in the first few pages of its search results out of possibly millions of other websites. However, there are 5 tried and tested methods which will improve your chances considerably and will be outlined in this article.

1. Choose a fairly narrow niche area such as a particular product. One example might be a niche of barbecues and then narrow that still further by choosing gas-fired barbecues. Choose a main keyword and several auxiliary keywords. You need to make sure that all of your keywords together have sufficient searches per month to be worthwhile. This is probably somewhere in the region of 5000 searches per month total for the chosen keywords. In addition the keywords must also have a relatively small amount of competition from competing websites. There are a number of tools which can be used to find both the number of searches and the amount of competition. These are the Google Adwords keywords tool, Micro Niche Finder and Market Samurai.

2. Choose and register a domain name to match your main keyword. Note that Google pays greatest attention to the main top-level domain names. The domain name for your website needs to be .com, .net or .org. You might well find that if for example you tried to register gasfiredbarbecues as a domain the major domain extensions would already be taken. In those circumstances it is better not to try and register with another domain extension because Google in its search results give so much preference to the main domains. It is better in that case to try a word in addition such as "reviews" or "choice"

3. When you build your website make sure that it has a good amount of original content which has not been copied from elsewhere. Ideally you should have a minimum of five pages of original content of at least 500 words per page. Your website should also have pages for "Contact us" "About Us" and "Privacy" Make sure that the content of your pages include your keywords. You should include one keyword as relevant to that page in the title of each page.

4. Build links from other websites to your own website. Use methods like writing articles which include links to your website or writing comments on Blogs or Forums with a link back to your website. Avoid using software or websites which automatically generate links. These will usually be detected by Google and you will end up with a lower ranking in search results.

5. Give it time. It takes time for Google to find your website in the first place. After this keep in mind that one of the factors which Google takes into account is the age of a website. More established websites have a better chance of ranking higher in the search results.
