subject: Carry On Spending When Unemployment Figures Soared, Thats What We Did [print this page]

It might be hard to stomach but the truth is that almost all of us take things for granted every day in the UK and the deep recession that weve supposedly just come out of, appears to have had very little noticeable impact on this.

Youd have thought that at a time when redundancy and unemployment reached an all time high and millions of people are out of work, the last thing people would feel like doing is shopping for things we can live without. No such luck, while spending crashed in the very early stages, it took next to no time to pick up again and only the cold, snowy weather could be blamed for a dip in high street spending in January.

February, March and April have all seen a rise in high street spending and a large percentage of companies are enjoying the same or higher figures as the same time last year, before the economy crashed and the recession kicked in. So theres nothing that can hold us back from the overwhelming urge to spend spend spend so it might be time to concentrate our efforts on where we can cut back to compensate instead.

People dont often get the shopping urge for everyday essentials like food, toiletries and cleaning products, nor do they just have to go out and buy the latest household appliance, washing machine or fridge freezer. These large items can be very expensive and they dont exactly fall into the impulse buy or treat yourself categories. So why are many people so quick to throw them away when they go wrong when the cheaper option might well be to look into appliance repairs?

The answer is simple, because were programmed to think that electrical appliances and technology in general is built to break and not to last and the shelf life is rarely longer than five years, as soon as something goes on the blink it goes in the bin.

But if you found out that appliance repair can be more cost effective than recycling or tipping and that you wouldnt have to wait in all day for the engineer to arrive, surely youd go for it, what would you have to lose? Well, the future is here and thats exactly whats on offer. Appliance repairs can now cost you as little as a call out charge and the replacement parts and if the problems more serious, well you can weigh up the age of your machine, how much a new version would cost you and the cost of the repair and make an informed decision.
