subject: The Right Fitness Coach [print this page]

Fitness trainers achieve results using many different methodologies. There are literally hundreds of ways to help clients achieve their fitness goals. A personal trainer must have the communication skills to help clients get past road blocks and achieve their goals.

If you are looking for a personal trainer, you want someone who can encourage your success every step of the way. Look for someone who fits your particular needs, not a trainer who is un flexible in their styles. You are not getting your money's worth when you pay for boring personal training sessions with someone who speaks in monotone, says the same things during every appointment, and hands out tips like a tenured college professor delivering a lecture.

Personal trainers are essentially coaches with a wealth of knowledge about human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and biomechanics. They should radiate enthusiasm for your success, motivating you, encouraging you all along the way. Their energy and enthusiasm for your achievments should be evident, and you should look forward to every session - maybe not the pain and agony, but the attaboys or attagirls you get should make you glow with pride.

If your trainer engages you, if your trainer knows how to keep you going even when you feel like quitting, you will utilize her again and again. Who wants to keep paying for a boring, blah trainer? Experienced personal trainers realize that their career depends on clients who feel comfortable, encouraged, educated, and - last but not least - successful in reaching their goals.

A personal trainer with a real background in team or individual coaching is worth his weight in gold. Ask your personal trainer if she has ever coached a team or taken coaching classes. Some personal trainers will have experience in being a nutrition coach in addition to their certification. Life coaching is also becoming quite popular, but life coaches don't always do personal training.

A coach is a personal trainer you can build a relationship with, someone you can trust with your concerns about your training progress, someone who is always there for you, spotting your form, cheering for you to improve. Find a personal trainer who is also a quality coach, and you will find success.
