subject: Working From Home Are Family-created Distractions And Self-distractions [print this page]

Working from home can have distractions: those created by family and those created by self.

Yet, the distractions I experience now in my home office, though, are so different from the other distractions I dealt with in my corporate jobs, though sometimes they seem to escalate during the summer when the kids are home due to the summer break from school. It's also a time when they enjoy having friends over. In my corporate office, however, I had the challenge of contending with "gossip girls and guys", candy dippers, and office politics..

At home I have, "Honey can you do this or that," and "Dad, when you're done, can you play with me?" My presence in my home gives my family the perception that I am readily available to stop what I am doing at any time in order to meet their needs. Phone calls, television noise levels, and even the dog barking can be a real part of working from home.

The challenge one has is to find a way to be aware of what's getting in the way and nip it in the bud before it prevents one from being successful or reaching one's daily goals. I'm oversimplifying to a degree, yet some fathers have a propensity to have a greater "home" nature that makes disconnecting family responsibilities work from. Seeing an unfinished task leads to feeling the need to make that top priority. And, before we know it, attention is diverted from work to getting another project. Our family instincts are so powerful that it's not easy sometimes to keep our business the priority. Men whose wives stay home with the kids know it's tough to stay "at work" when you know you're really at home. Since the kids are a huge distraction to me, I do the majority of my work when my wife is home and able to take care of them.

Flexibility is a key advantage of working out of home. Working from home does away with the distractions usually associated with working from a traditional office. There is no dealing with those ever present "gossip girls and guys", candy dippers, and office politicians..

You can wake up at your own leisure and finish working whenever you please since there is no company policy regulating in-time or out-time. This kind of flexibility is almost never achieved while working away from home. While being a disadvantage another advantage about working from home would that you are always near your family. One is available if needed in a circumstance of immediacy. Simply the lack of a need to commute saves one a huge amount of time that can instead be spent on being productive in one's business.

For men who want to preserve a career without concessions on their family working from home needs to be considered a viable option since doing so offers a perfect balance between the two. Time-honored work places are also usually breeding grounds for office-politics and pointless stress which are avoided by working from home. Even the employers can be content if the employees want to work from home as long as deadlines and targets are achieved. Such a working arrangement can also reduce a lot of overhead costs and, therefore, be beneficial to the employers bottom-line.

Yet, there are quite a few disadvantages associated with working from home. One disadvantage that is also an advantage is the ability to be flexible. Too much of a good thing is believed to be bad. This adage applies here also. They saying is that working from home is relatively easy, you can fit spending time with your family around work, and you save time and money on travel. Yet, business owners need to be self-disciplined and need to make certain that they do not lose focus from their work. Although working from home is comfortable, you need to clearly distinguish between working and living areas. By searching online you can find many useful tips and tools to make working from home the ideal solution for your vocation. Setting aside a specific space for your laptop or pc and work-related items will help keep you motivated and will make a distinction between your work and living areas. Stick to work hours is crucial, and will help keep the stress levels of you and your family down.

Working from home is, in this author's opinion, the best of both worlds: being able to provide for your family and being able to spend time with them.
