subject: How Do You Know When You Need a Moving Company? [print this page]

Choosing a moving company is a really big deal. You can't just hop around and hire the first moving company that you see. You have to thinkdo I really need a moving company? And what DO I need? What's my budget? What don't I need? What is the most or least I can get away with?

First of all, if you have a small apartment, you probably don't need to hire movers. If you have twenty friends willing to help you who all have large trucks, you probably don't need movers.

However, if you are disabled, sick, or just can't do a lot of heavy lifting, then you definitely want to look into hiring a moving company!

If you are older, have a lot of stuff, or are way too busy to move your items by yourself, then you need to hire one.

But the main thing you need to do is FIND a moving company. This doesn't mean that you just search up your local movers in the phonebookthis is where you get serious. Ask friends, ask coworkers. Most of all, look online.

When you look online, you not only get to see what companies are out there (especially if you don't have an updated phonebook), but also what services they offer. Many companies now have sites that you can visit and get a rough estimate of what your total cost will be. Different companies have varying rateswhich is just one more reason why you should make sure to look online.

However, the main thing that you need to remember when looking online is to check out reviews and testimonials. The testimonials are usually on the sites, in plain site. There's a reason for this; they want you to see their good side and hire them. However, there are a few scammers who use this technique to drain a person's bank account or steal their precious items. This is why reviews enable you to root out the scammers and find a really, truly good company. If you can't find reviews, you can give them a shot and see where it goes. Just rememberif it sounds too good to be true, check one more time a few days afterwards and then decide.

Most companies offer services such as packing and moving inside and outhowever, there are a few companies that do not offer these. If you have the packing skills of a blind hippopotamus, then you probably want to find a moving company that will pack for you. If you are really petite and not very strong, you want someone who will move your furniture in and out of your home(s).

Try to plan your moving budget once before and once after you find a company that you like. If there are any varying fees (such as for traffic congestion), then allow for those extra fees so that you don't come up short. Also, make sure to check out these companies a few months before you moveit will help you to know when and how much to save up.
