subject: Samsung Tocco Lite: Handset You Will Admire by:Simon Drew [print this page]

The Tocco line from Samsung has achieved quite a following as competent fashion phones. Now Samsung offers the Tocco Lite at a friendlier price but with slightly lesser features aimed at the mid-range touchscreen market.

Competitive features at a friendly price

It's a full-face touchscreen phone sporting a 3-inch LCD at QVGA and 256k color support. Not wanting to lag behind other touch screen, the Tocco Lite has features that make it attractive enough for the fashion-conscious crowd, such as:

- Tocco Lite is a 2G quad-band GSM phone supporting EDGE and Class 12 GPRS technologies.

- It has an accelerometer sensor enabling portrait and landscape views as you tilt the handset accordingly

- Touch screen UI uses the famous Samsung TouchWiz technology

- Has the proprietary Samsung DNSe 2.0 to enhance music listening with virtual surround sound and equalizer support.

- Takes video shots at VGA resolution and at 15fps

- Audio and video players support all the popular codecs in the market

- Sports 64mb internal memory with 50mb for the user and can be upgraded to 16Gb using its slot support for microSD memory cards

- Comes with selectable widgets for instant internet access for Google and social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube and MySpace

- Has a 3.1mpx camera with LED flash that has face recognition and SmileShot features.

- Supports Bluetooth 2,0- with A2DP for wireless stereo headsets.

- Supports USB 2.0 for fast uploading and downloading to and from a PC or laptop

- Has handwriting recognition

- One of the longest battery life for a slim phone using 1000mh battery with about 10 hours of talk time.

Now all this comes with the usual phone functions that allow for call and text management and a competent set of application for organizing your phone data. Personalizing the phone with widgets as well the conventional ring tone customization are standard.

Some things you won't get

The absence of high-speed network support can be dismaying when you start using the widgets that promise instant Internet access at a single click or touch on the screen. In addition, this is admittedly not a Pixon phone in the Samsung line, so don't expect its camera phone to be as engaging.

The final word

Honestly, it's a very capable phone and certainly holds its own when compared with others in the same class or price range. The Samsung Tocco Lite offers a decent mobile experience with a fine multimedia player, a good camera, and a highly responsive touchscreen on a beautiful body at a very friendly price. But it's not a full-featured Tocco phone. Of course, you can't expect that when Samsung calls it "Lite."
