subject: Dog Door [print this page]

If you have a secure garden and aren't the biggest fan of waking up in the middle of the night to let your dog out to do its business then investing in a dog door, similar to a cat flap, is a good idea. Dog doors work in any household but the first thing you will need to think of is the size of your dog. If you have just bought a puppy, then it will obviously grow and you need to take this into account, you should also consider what is on the other side of the door. There needs to be a fenced in area so that the dog can't escape.

Dog doors are very useful, however, if your dog can get in and back out, so can other animals. Cheap dog doors can often allow cats or other small wild animals into your home. If you want to prevent this, you should look at some of the latching types of dog doors.

Latching dog doors are also good if you want to be able to restrict your dogs movements. For example, there are some dog doors that you can latch so that they will only open in one direction. This is great if you want to allow your dog to go outside at any point during the day, but dont want it coming back inside until after youve finished doing something. This also restricts other animals from coming into your house through the door.

Another thing that you should consider about dog doors is that if you get a high quality dog door that closes well, you can conserve heat better than you would with a cheaper one. This is especially important during the winter.
