subject: Raising Backyard Chickens: Know Your Legal Aspects Before Starting [print this page]

We are often confused whether chickens are pets or simply kept for productive aspects. One logical reasoning can be that if more chickens are raised and their eggs are consumed, then they are for productive and profitable reasons. And if a person keeps a chicken-that is because they want to keep the chickens as a pet. This is where the problem and the confusion with legal aspects come into play. This is to give you a thorough insight into the legal corners that you might have to face.

Necessary Permission: It is especially important in some countries that you need to take a NOC from your local councilor among other things. Also, you have to need to know whether you area and space and house permits for breeding chickens. If you did not know, then there could be complications and your little ones could be outlawed by the rules in your area or otherwise.

Health Department: The government does not want a re-run of what affected masses worldwide-Bird Flu and hence the mentioned checks. Whatever be the weird reason and explanation, the chickens must pass the Environmental Health Departments checks before passing a clean order. These are some formalities that have to be complied with in order to keep and breed chickens in your backyard.

Neighbours: Your neighbours may object to you raising chickens in your backyard. This is mainly because the chicken (cockerel) is considered to be a very noise and dirty animal and is associated with foul odors amongst others. Therefore if the local area council does not approve of your hobby or business interest due to complaints from neighbours, you can really do nothing about that. This problem is subjective and if youre interested in breeding chickens, you better convince your neighbours first!

House Deed: Before even starting to think about raising chickens in your house, you have to ensure that your house deed is in order and is out of any legal complications. Unexpected hurdles may arise with house deeds and raising chickens! No wonder, they are a deadly combination literally!

Zone Laws and Land Usage: Did you know that there are laws which govern a zone? The entire city or town has been divided into many zones this is to check land usage patterns. This is part of the larger plan and law which governs us. The zone laws have been drafted particularly to check the growth and multiplication of a particular community. There would be problems if chickens were allowed a free run there!

Before thinking about starting any venture, you must take care and consider the legal complications; you wouldnt want to be in a mess! It is for you and you chickens welfare!
