subject: Epoxy Primer [print this page]

Epoxy primer problems arise because of the poor surface preparation. Prior to epoxy primer being applied to any type of surface, it must be set for adhesion, or the epoxy will chip away over time.

1] Wood

Wood needs soft surface prior to epoxy coating. All kinds of loose paint must be removed and a latex bonding primer must be applied to the raw wood. Epoxy will peel up if applied over raw wood.

2] Plastic and Vinyl

Plastic and vinyl being nonporous are not suitable for epoxy adhesion. Therefore must be scoured with sandpaper to increase adhesion. This helps the epoxy stick to the slick surface which prevents future surface failure.

3] Metal

Even metallic surfaces are nonporous, so unsuitable for epoxy adhesion. Here an etching primer must be applied to increase adhesion, which will help epoxy primer stick to the metal. Without this etching primer, the epoxy will chip away rather quickly.

4] Concrete

Epoxy primers will not stick to concrete surfaces till they are treated with any acid etch in advance. Muriatic acid etching kits are available at most paint or home improvement stores.

Epoxy primers no doubt offers unmatched durability; but it will peel off if proper surface preparation techniques arent carried out. A few surfaces need specific abrasion and priming treatments that are crucial for strong adhesion.
