Like other popular tourist destinations in China, the city of Tianjin too is a historical city packed with magnificent landmarks and sightseeing spots. Among the many attractions in Tianjin some of the most beautiful spots to explore are concentrated in one of its mountains. This area is tucked away in the Jixian County and has been renowned for centuries as the Mt. Panshan Scenic Area.

Mount Panshan is declared as an AAAAA tourist attraction in China. The five As ranking is given by the China National Tourism Administrations quality ranking committee, following inspections and assessments of individual attractions. China boasts of over 60 scenic spots bearing the five As rank of which Tianjin itself has two such spots namely Mt. Panshan and the Tianjin Ancient Culture Street.

Mount Panshans charm has attracted visitors from all walks of life including emperors, scholars and luminaries since the Han Dynasty, dating back to the third century BC. The most notable of all visitors was Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty who embraced the striking scenery of this mountain 32 times. He even wrote over 1000 poems following his journeys, imbued with this mountains extraordinary beauty.

Mt. Panshan Scenic Area spans about 106 square kilometres and rests around 90 km from Beijing and just over 100 km off Tianjin. It is a site teeming with historical attractions counting over 70 temples, scores of towers and Xanadus besides 13 pagodas that were built in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Xanadus are idyllic sites coined after the renowned poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In the 1990s the entire site underwent a restoration to regain its glory, as most of these historical sites were in ruins following World War II.

A hike up Mt. Panshan will let you explore spellbinding sights and vistas. Crystal clear waters give you a feeling of freshness while a canopy of lush pine trees will keep you sheltered. And there lurking behind the shadows you may encounter a General, boa and a toad only to discover in the end that they are nothing but mere rocks.

Mt. Panshan has five peaks of which the tallest is the Guayue Feng or the Moon Hanging Peak reaching a height of about 864 metres. You could capture a stunning panorama from up here encompassing Mount Taishan and a portion of the Great Wall of China. The area also contains four key temples flaunting impressive ancient Chinese architecture. One of its temples known as the Wanfo Temple is said to house more than 10,000 small Buddha images. Mt. Panshan Scenic Area features several towers of which the tallest one reaches up to 13 floors.

Apart from its historical attractions and scenic splendour, Mount Panshan is an area rich in biodiversity, as you could find over 300 types of flora here. Beware of your step while touring this picture perfect area for there are spine chilling precipices snuggled amidst massive boulders. Moreover you would also see numerous monuments rising above the green carpeted mountain.
