subject: The Ultimate Colour Guide For Your New Modular Sofa [print this page]

Deciding on the colour for your new modular sofa is an important decision and one you will have to live with for some time. It is best not to rush into it or be unduly swayed by the latest fashionable colours on display as they may seem dated within a year or two.

That bright red sofa might seem like the height of fashion right now, but could look somewhat pass within a year or two, as well as being somewhat limiting for your overall room dcor. You are better off choosing a neutral coloured sofa as a background for splashes of brighter or darker colours. It's easier to change the look that way .If your sofa has high traffic you should consider a patter or fabric that won't show dirt and stains easily, otherwise it will be very difficult to keep it looking presentable.

If you want some bright, cheerful colours then you can jazz up things with warm throws or scatter cushions. These are not expensive so can be replaced from time to time, or maybe you can just replace the cushion covers.

If your lounge walls are light in colour, then often a darker sofa is a good choice. It can make more of a statement and look less washed out than a light colour that's very similar in tone to the walls. You need to take into account the overall colour scheme carefully so that the walls and soft furnishings are in harmony and that the colour scheme works to the best advantage. A rich vibrant colour on the walls for example can be exciting, but not exactly restful. Also it can make a room seem smaller and more claustrophobic

You can use paint colour charts to get an idea of schemes that work well. You can mix and match to see what colours go together in your room's natural light. You can then decide on your overall theme, whether it be one of harmony or of contrast. You may want to decorate your walls first so that you can then choose your sofa to fit in with this, or you may have all ready come across a sofa that you really like and are prepared to configure the room dcor appropriately.

If choosing a light plain shade for your sofa, you could use some more fancy cushions, perhaps with pattern, in order to add interest. A light coloured plain sofa gives you the maximum choice with regard to cushions. They can be any number of darker or brighter colours to compliment, and add a personal touch.

Your sofa's style should reflect the overall style that you are trying to achieve. If you have minimalist dcor, for example, then a black leather sofa always looks good. For a more traditional feel you could try a brown or cream leather sofa. Leather may not be quite as soft and comfy as some other materials but it ages well and is less likely to need replacing in a few years. A leather sofa can be a solid investment.

If your sofa is a solid uniform hue you may want to cover your other chairs to match. If buying slip-on covers you need to make sure you can take them back and change them if necessary as colours can look different in different lighting conditions.

Usually one can pick out colours from fabrics in a room, in curtains or on chairs, which can be used in cover-slips for other furniture to tie them together. For instance, if the stuffed chairs are covered with a woven fabric with some flecks or stripes of gold, then you could use a coordinating gold material for your sofa cover. The effect is to link the furniture pieces.

Another way is to find an accent colour from something else in the room, say a red tint in a picture. By echoing this colour in other areas of the room you can amplify the effect of the warm red. Use the same, or as near the same as you can, colour in cushions, other pictures or ornaments, or rugs to enhance the effect.
