subject: Woolworths Corporation To Big? [print this page] The rising growth and power of corporations seems a little scarey. Or at least it certainly is with woolworths ( an australian company ) which has grown over the years till it controls so much of the supermarket industry that It is Australia's largest supermarket chain. Not only that, it has a hand in many other industries as well ( almost everything )
the comapny has 700+ locations, 42.3 billion dollars, and if you grew up in Australia there are very good odds that you have worked for woolworths at some point.
But is it becoming to big? is woolworths strangling competition and quality. For one thing The corporation has Dan Murphies ( an alcohol chain ) Dick smith ( an electronics store ) also along with Big w, Woolworths Liquor, Flemings, Tandy. The list goes on but Woolworth is also the largest hotel and poker machine operator in Australia.
And also more recently the company has Thomas dux, a company which recently took over an organic supermarket chain called Macro which had a modern green theme. So woollies has a plan to expand with the times and use organic green produce and low carbon emissions as a foundation for their future.
That was the point of their new logo ( a leaf ) which isn't just similiar to Apple's well known logo, but to that of Macro, the only difference being a more round shape. You can't find much of the old logo any more but trust me ( i used to work for them )
You might ask what is the problem with such an industry? well they are good and thankfully better than some situations we could have. But what Woolworths does do is reproduce the same products as their local competitors, which is much cheaper, more plentiful, but much worse in quality. The idea is to suck up the market till the competitors are out or just stop making that product, then so does woolies and we can't find it anywhere.
The situation isn't that bad now, but it will be in the future. If they can run un-checked then they could own the market. But its not their fault, they are following the law. People shouldn't complain to woolworths, after all they have done nothing wrong. What they should do is complain to the government to institute new laws on how much a corporation can own.
