The fact that nearly 50% of young people in education were going on to University meant that not only were there less workers contributing to the tax system (and infact being further reliant on state means) but also the qualification and the reputuation of a degree was being diluted. Perhaps a return tolower percentageof the population entering HE institutions is more sustainable over the long-term but will come as not sympathy for all those affected, including Newport as a whole, in the short term
