subject: What Are You Doing To Keep Yourself Out Of The Nursing Home? [print this page] Most of us would like to live our life strong, fit and with energy. Not just for the sake of our outward appearance but so we can feel better, function better and live longer.
Unfortunately many of us also fall prey to mental obstacles that prevent us from getting the proper exercise we need often at a time in our life when we need it the most.
If you do not exercise you may get by each day and you might get lucky and not get one of the chronic 'lifestyle' diseases that are rife in our inactive and sedentary world. But keeping strong and fit is about expecting and getting more than that. It is a much higher quality of life and health.
The very first obstacle then to conquer if health and fitness is to be improved and maintained is to stop thinking of exercise as an option. Devoting a small portion of time each week to 2-3 sessions of proper exercise is not an 'optional extra' or a 'luxury'. It is an essential requirement of living.
After all:
The human body was made to be active - very active
Vigorous muscular activity is how your body stays well and healthy
If you wish to be energetic you have to use energy to gain more energy
The human body cannot handle the stress of sitting almost all of each day
A strong body is better able to function at its potential rather than just limp along
Strong and fit people always feel better about themselves and their lot in life
Have you given any thought to what sort of shape you will be in when you get to 40, 50, 60 or more years old? Will you want to still be independent and looking after yourself or would you expect someone else like family, friends or the community to pick up the tab because you can no longer perform the daily necessities of living? After all we only get like this because we have spent the previous 30 or more years inactive or sedentary.
How you will spend the last third of your life is determined by the choices you make and do not make every single day concerning your strength and fitness in the previous years. If you have not bothered about it there is a high possibility you will be robbed of your health and mobility long before it is necessary. If these things are taken away from you along with your independence that last third of life is not going to be much fun at all.
Once we get into our 30's our body starts a long and gradual degeneration with muscle tissue loss as the greatest change. That is unless we take steps such as a proper strength training exercise program to halt at best or slow down this muscle meltdown as it accelerates aging and leaves the door wide open to the preventable diseases that stalk us.
If you are currently suffering from signs of this process such as a widening waistline, loss of strength and general fitness, lack of energy, decreased brain power and are feeling older and more tired than you think you should be for your age the solution is so easy. Just rebuild and restore your muscle tissue and strength and it will turn your life around.
When we take action and grab back our strength we will also enjoy a cascade of health benefits such as looking better, feeling better, functioning better, and having more energy to enjoy more of life.
But your exercise program is not 'an option' you will need a 'do it or die' mentality and discussion with yourself such as "should I do it today or shouldn't I do it today" is simply not negotiable. You will need to just do it and keep doing it for all of your adult life if you wish to stay out of the nursing home and add years of quality living to your life.
