How to proceed with US citizenship application and the related forms

In the case you are permanent resident of the United States, your chance to obtain naturalized U.S. citizenship is more. The handling of naturalization process is usually vested in U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). US Citizenship law is very complex. However, a few of them will be enough to get the idea to apply for US Citizenship.

First of all you should think of the correct date at which you will be possible to apply for the US citizenship. If that date is sufficient, wait until it gets matured. You need probably to wait until three years of time after your marriage with a U.S. citizen. It has been printed on the Permanent Resident Card, also called green card renewal.

You have probably to wait for at least five years if you are not married to a U.S. citizen, at the same time you have a green card. They will take U.S. residence and physical presence into account while processing the application. Your state or USCIS residence is also a criterion.

Application for Naturalization can be downloaded from the USCIS website. It is Form N-400. Two passport size photographs should be there with the application. Moreover, copies of passport, birth certificate, marriage certificate, and details of criminal record if any are also to be attached with the application.

There will be service centre in your locality from where you can file your application in form N-400. Or else you can mail it to the USCIS Lockbox Facility. The application must be accompanied by all the documents in proof of your claim laid down in your application. An appointment letter will be obtained within a short time.

Basic knowledge in English and knowledge in fundamentals of US history are essential. Knowledge in Political system of the US is also important. The materials to be learned may be downloaded from the section "Education and Resources" in the website of USCIS

At the time of interview you will compulsorily be asked to produce an identification card issued by the government, and Permanent Resident card in addition to the requested documents. Your knowledge in English and civics will be tested besides answering the entire question related with your application.

Naturalization ceremony will have to be attended. Then, take the oath of Allegiance after surrendering your Permanent Resident Card. All the procedure related will be over with it, and your certificate of Naturalization will be issued.
