subject: Rhinoplasty (nose Job) - General Cosmetic Surgery Matters For Patients [print this page]

Rhinoplasty (nose job) is the cosmetic surgery procedure used to make major, or minor surgical adjustments to the nose. The adjustments can include repairing a broken septum, size reduction, or straightening of the nose. This procedure can correct imperfections or repair damage done to the nose. As the nose occupies such a prominent location on the face, many individuals opt to have this cosmetic surgery when they are unhappy with the appearance of the nose.

The reasons for having rhinoplasty (nose job) are as diverse as the individuals who have the surgery completed. For some their reasons are more aesthetically based, and for others their reasons are more practical. For instance, a broken septum can result in many breathing problems, and this procedure can drastically improve the ease of breathing. But, for other individuals the reason is more about the way their nose looks, or the way they think it looks, to others.

The two rhinoplasty (nose job) options are named open, or closed rhinoplasty. In the open rhinoplasty surgical procedure, incisions can be made both to the inside, as well as the outside of the nose. This could be an incision on the tip between both nasal passages. With closed rhinoplasty however, incisions are strictly confined to the inside of the nose only. Depending on what the surgeon will be trying to accomplish will dictate the appropriate option.

The surgical procedure for a rhinoplasty (nose job) is a simple process that can be done on an outpatient basis. This means you will be in and out of the surgery, and on your way home the same day. Of course you will want someone to provide transportation afterwards because your face will be bandaged to protect incisions from infection. Also, post operative medication will probably be prescribed, so you can expect to feel lethargic for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Recovery from rhinoplasty (nose job) depends on whether you had the open, or closed rhinoplasty procedure. With both procedures you can expect some bruising on the face, especially around the eyes, and nose. Expect to experience some swelling of the face, and nose as the healing takes place. With closed rhinoplasty full and complete recovery can be expected in one to six weeks. An open rhinoplasty procedure can take from two to three months for complete recovery depending on the extent of the adjustments performed.
