subject: Passing PMP Exam - Want to know the secret? [print this page]

So you've decided to become a certified Project Management Professional?

I bet it seemed like a good idea at the time, hey? You could just picture the

sense of achievement, could see the certificate on the wall, could picture the

new addition to the business card? Then somewhere along the line you realized,

with shock and horror - you would need to open a text book and read it...a very

big text book! You'd need to become an expert in the Project Management Body of

Knowledge, the theory, the application, examples...yep...it's not easy, is it?

Study, especially if you haven't done it for a while, or if you are juggling

full time work, 3 kids, playing sport (hopefully) and just life, is hard. So in

this article I want to offer you a few ways to help you pass that PMP exam AND

I'll tell you the secret, that magic bullet, the special sauce, the Colonel's

secret herbs and spices....well, ok, I don't really know about the chicken

spices...but I can help with the PMP exam preparation.

Method A: We'll call this the 'Traditional' method. This

involves buying the PMBOK Guide and reading it from cover to cover, summarizing

it along the way. Then do some practice exam questions that you've found

here and there on the net.

Pros: You just need to buy one book. All the information you need is

contained right before you.

Cons: ZZzzzz....sorry, did you say something? Ahhhh, boring! Yes, it's so

mind numbingly presented that you find it hard for your brain to actually

get anything to stick. You don't know which bits are really important and

which you can gloss over and the whole darned thing is just so big, it's all

just too hard. Oh and did I mention boring?

Method B: We'll call this the 'Hmmm, warmer' method. This

involves buying a studyguide and some study questions to go along with your

PMBOK manual so that you can just work through a guide that will tell you where

the important bits are and keep you focused on what's necessary and relevant

for the exam.

Pros: They usually come with some exam preparation questions and exercises.

They keep you focused on what you need to know. They make the wade through

the manual easier.

Cons: It's more money on top of the first book. It's still reading a textbook.

Method C: We'll call this the 'Best ever, easiest and most fun'

method. This involves buying a multimedia PMP exam preparation course that

offers you the opportunity to learn through audio, video, sample questions and

allows you to access content from your iPhone or iPod as well as offering you

an online support forum. Now doesn't that sound cool?

Pros: Well...come on...it's just awesome, clearly! You don't have to wade

through more text books, you can listen in the car, you can watch on your

iPhone wherever and whenever you want!

Cons: It costs money...but not a lot surprisingly!

So there's three ways to pass your PMP exam. As for the secret...well huddle in

close everyone, I'm going to tell you, the secret to passing your PMP exam is...

Study and Practice! Yup, that's all there is, it's all about how you do it!
