I want you to eat foods that are high in protein, such as chicken, fish, lean cuts of beef, lamb, egg whites, and nuts. I want you to eat foods that are high in fiber, such as most fruits and vegetables and true whole grains. Please note that the wheat bread you buy at your local supermarket is typically processed in much the same way as white bread; I'm talking about whole grain bread that actually has whole grains or sprouts in it. By following these few simple suggestions, you will experience weight loss quickly. When you choose to eat simple sugars or starchy high glycemic carbohydrates, I that you eat them strategically-in moderation and in small portions, the size of your palm.
Most social events, business meetings romantic dates, and get-togethers with friends and family revolve around the consumption of food. Eating is a part of our social culture and will remain so for a long time to come. My suggestion is to occasionally eat a small bowl (cup) of pasta or half a baked potato. Take a couple of bites of dessert instead of eating the whole thing. Have a few fries, not a supersized portion, with your burger wrapped in lettuce rather than a bun. Other times, have a side salad or a vegetable with your burger and take one bun off. Instead of having a bag of chips, eat a handful every so often. What I'm asking you to do is to reduce how often you eat these types of foods, eat them in moderation when you do, and eat a little protein with each meal. That's not asking too much, is it?
Eating healthfully means being more aware of your food choices and, at times, making compromises. Isn't a relationship with a spouse all about compromise? Am I being unrealistic to ask this of you? We are all intelligent enough to know that a diet made up of junk food and starchy high glycemic carbohydrates is not going to support our fitness goals. So let's just admit that reducing these foods is the solution and get on with it. If you cannot reduce how often you eat these foods and eat them in moderation when you do, you will have to eliminate them from your diet completely until such time as you can eat them in moderation-if ever. There is no other magic solution. This will be the most difficult of truths to face. Let's be honest: these are the foods that made you fat. I understand that you will experience setbacks and times when you will revert back to old habits and patterns, but the key is to acknowledge them and move on. Remember, you are embarking on a new lifestyle. There will be setbacks. Your goal is to stay the course and keep moving forward despite them. Give credit to the fact that you are doing your best, and use that fact to motivate yourself to make healthier food choices. Living a healthy lifestyle is not about being perfect, it's about doing the best you can every day. It's about continually raising the bar of your own expectations of yourself so that you are happy with your choices.
