subject: Wheelchairs -- A Guide To Independence [print this page] Someone very close to me was in the midst of hard times. Because of her declining health she seemed to be distracted, and depressed lately. Actually if I were to loose the ability to do basic things in life, stuff like getting to the post office, or even going to get the mail, I think I'd be a little down too.
If you find yourself in a situation like my friend for whatever reason, whether it's because of your health or your age or your weight, then you need to do what she did. She's happier now than I have seen her in years.
She had to come around to the idea of owning a wheelchair. It was almost as if -- to her -- that if she were to get a wheelchair that it would mean that her disease had won. I encouraged her to check into it anyway, so we did together. We went online and checked out all that was available. Her whole attitude about owning a wheelchair was starting to change.
It didn't take us long to find out about power wheelchairs and scooters of all kinds like the jazzy electric wheel chairs and everything available for it. We also found out about lightweight wheelchairs, and motorized wheelchairs. They didn't look stuffy or old-fashioned at all, and they were very customizable. There were so many options available. She was starting to like this idea! The power chair she liked the most seemed to be the Jazzy electric wheel chair. Next she chose the color and accessories. The cupholder and the grocery basket seemed to be what she wanted the most.
Once the chair arrived, she had to make some adjustments. After some trial and error, she finally became comfortable with how to use it. Operating her Jazzy electric wheelchair now comes completely natural to her.
If she hadn't done this, who knows where she'd be now. Her life has improved dramatically with her new found freedom.
