The Motorola W156 is a candybar device. This slim grayscale phone features a Monochrome display. The stylish body is made of plastic and has a 1.5-inch screen with a resolution of 128X128 pixels. The circular D-pad is at the bottom of the screen and is surrounded by four keys. The two keys on the left are for settings and making calls. On the right are the message and power keys. The D-pad's up, down, right and left keys are shortcuts for ring style, sending messages, viewing recent calls and contacts respectively. The center of the D-pad is for accessing the menu. The slot for the charger is on the left panel while the headset slot is on the right. This device has a large font size and an elegant keypad, which is comfortable to use while typing messages and dialling numbers. The Motorola W156 is rich in features and services. It is powered by Motorola's CrystalTalk technology, which minimises background noise. Hence, users can hear clearly even in noisy environments. Available in only black color, the W156 comes with a built-in calender that also has a reminder facility for appointments, birthdays, events and holidays. Other features include applications like currency converter, alarm clock, auto keypad lock, stop watch and 32 preloaded polyphonic ringtones with ringtone composing application and other standard alerts. The phone also has a handsfree speakerphone and vibration alert for incoming calls. The Motorola W156 has a USB v1.1 port connection for wired connectivity to PCs for data transfer and charging. This entry-level device weighs just 85 grams and has an internal storage of 20 KB(100 phone numbers and 60 SMSes). However, the memory can be expanded. The W156 does not have an FM radio, which is a common feature in all basic phones these days. The handset is embedded with several games, including Spring Ball, Football, Crazy, Rebels, Sudoku, Tetris and Maze.
