subject: Brooklyn used car buyers can follow these tips to make the most of their test drives [print this page]

When you go for a test drive does it make sense to just cruise down a main thoroughfare and stop at a couple of lights? Shouldn't you see how a vehicle will handle driving through a day in your life? Brooklyn used car dealers recommend just that drive it like you live it. *Start out by heading for the highway and merging into traffic. How's the pick-up? Do you feel like you're going with the flow or about to get run over? Listen to how the vehicle sounds as you drive and accelerate. Does it sound normal?

*While you're up to speed, check out the cruise control and be sure it sets correctly, cancels and performs any other function available. *Find a driveway and pull in and back out a couple of times. Can you see what's behind you? If parallel parking is something you do (I try to avoid it whenever possible) put the vehicle through that pace as well. Brooklyn used car dealers say you shouldn't feel awkward about testing out all aspects of a vehicle. After all, you're the one who may be buying it and you have a right to know about any issues.

*Find a road with a few rough spots or bumps (the brick street where I live comes to mind). See how the vehicle handles. Are there any suspicious rattles? Is there excessive bouncing? How about during sharp turns do you feel the vehicle leaning?

*This might be a good time to note if the seat is comfortable. Would it be acceptable for a longer ride? Try adjusting the positions and make sure it has a setting that allows proper leg room and back support.

*To check the alignment, take your hands off the steering wheel and check for drifting to the left or right. Buyers of NJ used cars should take note of any small things that might be a problem. *Do the brakes operate smoothly? If braking causes the vehicle to pull to one side or the other this could indicate trouble. Squeaking or severe pitching forward when stopping could also be an issue.

*Before you exit the vehicle, note how much clearance is available for your head and legs in getting in and out. You don't want to have to fold yourself up to fit into a vehicle you will drive every day. On the other hand, you want to be able to comfortable reach all controls so you can drive safely.

*Once you stop, you may want to keep the engine running and look and listen further. The important thing is to be sure you are comfortable with any vehicle you consider purchasing. If you still have questions about mechanical or performance issues, don't hesitate to contact a trusted mechanic before you make your purchase. Buyers of NJ used cars will feel much more confident when following these suggestions.
