Its one of those things that sales people always push at the end of the mattress and bed buying process and we usually just say yes to because its a case of a few extra quid and quite frankly weve had enough of decision making and haggling by that point. Mattress covers are sold as a way to protect your mattress but what from, the bogey monster? No, more likely friction, wear and tear and spillages or staining but isnt this exactly what your bed sheets do?
The mattress cover tends to be made of a thicker material than your standard bet sheets, giving an extra level of protection against the wear and tear associated with a bed. Its true that for a few extra pounds you should probably invest in one, after all these do seem to outlast the mattress in a lot of cases, suggesting theyre good value for money. The point is that the cover is something you can take off the mattress and launder as you would your bedding, towels or clothing and you otherwise have no way of cleaning your mattress.
Unlike a duvet which you can take to the cleaners every now and then to be washed in their industrial machines, once your mattress is on your bed, theres no taking it off to clean. This is particularly annoying if you take a hot milky drink to bed and spill it on the mattress or youve been treated to breakfast and bed and you drop a pile of baked beans or a glass of orange juice; what exactly are you supposed to do next? If the spillage has got to make its way through two layers rather than one, youve got a good chance of saving the mattress.
The other reason to invest in a mattress cover is because your bed can begin to smell over time, after all we all sweat every minute of every day and probably even more so during the night when were all wrapped up or snuggled up next to someone. Ideally you want to be able to take as many washable layers off your mattress as possible to wash, making sure its fresher for longer.
