subject: Solar Panels in the Kings Lynn Area [print this page]

Looking on the Kings Lynn and West Norfolk borough council website recently, I was pleasantly surprised to see information and advice for residents wanting to install solar panels.

This can be found in their environment and waste section under the heading solar renewable measures'. This leads to a page that stresses the benefits of using renewable energy, and gives interesting facts such as in the UK we receive, on average, 60% of the solar power that is received on the equator'.

This is clearly an effort to convince local residents that investing in solar panels is worthwhile. Something that you will not find on most website for local authorities. For this, I believe, Kings Lynn district council should be applauded.

The question is; is it working? Written in early 2009 it does not mention Government incentives for installing solar panels such as feed-in-tariffs (FITs) and Renewable Heat Incentives (RHI). The former was launched in April this year and the latter to be launched next April.

By missing out the incentives that have at 8-10% ROI, the argument for residents of Kings Lynn to invest in solar panels is not as strong as it could be.

There's also the fact that the page is not easily found by the search engines. If you were to Google Solar panels Kings Lynn' the webpages do not appear.

Additionally, having scouted about Internet, there does not seem to be much else form Kings Lynn and west Norfolk borough council on solar panels.

While there is clearly room for improvement here, at least they've taken a step in promoting the use in solar panels.

Perhaps they could lead the way by installing solar panels on their own buildings. Norfolk County Council looking into doing this, and to some extent already are doing it with solar panels beginning to be installed on schools in the County. With many of the Kings Lynn Councillors being twin hatters' (sitting on the County Council as well as the District Council) they will be able to see first hand whether this works.
