subject: The Status Of Protecting Child's Right In China [print this page]

Fifty years ago, Declaration of the Rights of the Child was promulgated by United Nations General Assembly. Obviously, the aim of the law was to protecting children's basic rights and freedoms. Ten Basic Principles such as the principle of best benefit and the principle of priority are included. Besides, the Declaration emphasized a statement that children should be protected priority under all circumstances. In 1989, UN Passed Convention on the Rights of Children, which is another relevant law to protect child's right. Some basic rights like the right to life, the right of privacy and the freedom of speech are mentioned in the law. The Convention requires all the countries participated should take necessary measures to protect the rights of children. China signed this convention in August 29, 1990 and became the 110th ratified states.

In China, the Law on the Protection of Minors was passed to fulfill the promise of protecting child's right. Although many achievements have been achieved, we have to admit that there is a long distance between our current situation and the ideal state described in the Convention. All kinds of prejudices about Children are existed in society.

In family, it's natural for parents to take good care of their child. But in most cases, parents usually don't respect the children's wishes, violate of children's privacy and deprive of the child's freedom of choice. In many parents' eyes, their children are so naive and ignorance that their decision should be determined by parents. For example, many parents forced their children to learn what they thought useful but their children don't interested in. better for children's future is the excuse they often taken. Actually, most children have the ability to judge what right is and what wrong is. Children who have received secondary education know their interest and have the ability to plan for the future. From survey, the result of coercion sometimes gets serious consequences. The health of children's physical and mental can be hurt, what's more, cases of corporal punishment and child abuse also repeatedly been reported to reveal parents authoritarianism.

In addition, school and society should take effective means to protect children's right. People hope that China, a country joined in the Convention, should do more to safeguard children's rights.
