India is a place where culture, traditions and art has been given special place. Since ancient times art has been of special significance to the Indians; cave paintings of Ajanta and Ellora make evident the unparalleled skills of Indian artists. The earliest paintings were the rock paintings from 1990s, artists began to multiply the forms they used in their work. India has also been the home of renowned artists who have earned their reputation globally. Their brilliant work has been rewarded exclusively at international auctions. Paintings of M.F. Husain and Tyeb Mehta have fetched millions. The stunning artworks and paintings have been on topics varying from religious to the abstract ones. Contemporary art however covers all aspects in every arena. There are some exceptional artists whose names have been respected and their works great valued. Some of them would be:

Abanindranath Tagore: he was the nephew of Rabindranath Tagore and earned the reputation of being among the outstanding artists from the Bengal school of painting.

Amrita Shergill: her brilliant artworks speak clearly about her love for the country and her response to the life of its people.

F.N. Souza: he lost his father in a very young age and was infected seriously infected by small pox. He took up the challenge and came to be one of the most famous artists in his time.

Jamini Roy

Born in a middle-class family he paved his way to earn his standing as an exceptional artist.

Raja Ravi Varma

He is counted among the greatest painters in Indian Arts history. His artworks are unique and include scenes from the epics of the Mahabharata and Ramayana. He is considered as modern among traditionalists and a rationalist among moderns.

MF Hussain

One of the finest Indian painter; he had lost his mother when he was one and a half years old. His works are highly priced in international markets.

Tyeb Mehta

A well known Indian artist with the record of the highest price for which an Indian painting has ever been sold, in a public auction (triptych painting Celebration was sold for 15 million Indian rupees).

Anjolie Ela Menon

She has been one of the most admired India's contemporary female artists and has earned a good name in domestic as well as international art scenario.. One of her art works, 'Yatra' was chosen for the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco at California in the year 2006.
