subject: An In-depth View On Obesity [print this page]

Technically obesity is defined as a condition wherein a person has an excess proportion of body fat. It can be diagnosed through determining one's body mass index (BMI) and when their BMI already exceeds 30 then this is the time one can be declared as obese.

This condition occurs when a person consumes more calories than what they can burn. Such can be related to very little engagement on an exercise regimen or even any forms of physical activity. Aside from this there are also other factors that can trigger obesity. For one, we can blame it on the age factor wherein it is a reality that as people get older the body's metabolism naturally slows down. This can be explained through the lessened physical activity one engages in. Admittedly, a 20-year old woman would not be able to run as much when they reach the age of 40 or so and more particularly slower when they reach their menopausal years.

Sometime obesity can be hereditary. There is a 75% chance for children who have an obese mother to acquire the same condition as they get older and the same percentage goes if their mother has been thin all her life. In some cases, obesity is related to some other illnesses such as with hypothyroidism or that poor performance of the thyroid which is responsible for metabolism.

The psychological aspect of individuals is also a great factor for obesity. Some people respond to their negative emotions such as boredom, sadness or anger through eating. This is usually described as binge eating wherein one continuously eats even after a hefty meal and feel like they do not have the power to restrain themselves.

There are also certain types of medications that can cause excessive weight gain particularly those that contain steroids or antidepressant ingredients.

Since the media and most of the American society have already declared that the standards for what is beautiful is a lean and slim figure people suffering from obesity also suffers from emotional torture day by day, feeling rejected and shameful of their appearance. During these times, it is important to have medical assistance for obese individual who has begun to experience emotionally-related problems.

For some it may still be applicable to take prescription weight loss pills or medications but for those who have already been immobilized by their condition may be subjected by their medical doctor for a weight loss surgery but only after a thorough diagnosis has been made.

But if dieters can simply opt for the traditional means to maintain their proper weight it would have to start with the acceptance that proper and healthy choices of foods is a must and a daily dose of an exercise regimen to boot. As for the food selection, it should mostly compose of fruits, vegetables and fiber. These food types are very low in calories and even have the ability to sweep away harmful toxins that have accumulated in one's system particularly when fiber is involved.

In terms of an exercise regimen it does not necessarily mean that one needs to sign up for a gym membership. Even as simple as walking for at least thirty minutes a day is helpful to get those calories burning.
