subject: Moving Heavy Freight: Where Do I Start? [print this page]

There are numerous things to consider when dealing with heavy haul trucking. First and foremost is deciding what type of service you will need. There are generally three types of heavy haul trucking: full load, power only, and government shipping. Full load consists of shipping anything that will fill the entire vehicle, whether it is a truck, train, or airplane. Some full load content may be lumber, concrete, or granite. Power only is a shipping medium that consists of the tractor only. With power only, there will be no trailer attached to the tractor. Power only is often associated with tank shipping, generator shipping, and asphalt shipping, to name a few. Finally, government shipping is used when transporting heavy freight associated with the military, emergencies, and disasters.

After deciding which heavy haul trucking service you will need, there are other variables that need to be considered. Cost is something that is important to any business or individual. Each superload will have a different price usually based on the number of axles on the vehicle. Obviously, the greater the number of axles, the high the price will be. The price will also shift when heavy freight is shipped via plane or train.

Another thing to consider when shipping heavy freight is the time of year; it may prove rather difficult to ship a 60 ton generator from Colorado to California in the middle of January when a snow storm is tearing through the Rocky Mountains. Moving south, problems may arise when shipping a compressor from Miami to Tallahassee during hurricane season. Mother Nature is unpredictable and should always be kept in mind when moving heavy freight.

Heavy haul trucking is a valuable commodity in the transportation world. Machines and tractors will often be needed in a place far from where it was built, and through the use of superloads, the possibilities of moving heavy freight are endless.
