Microsoft has released the beta of My Phone service available to all users of Windows Mobile. The service files, like Apple's Mobile Me, from a smartphone online store. Microsoft My Phone syncs information on your mobile phone to a storage space on a web site hosted by Microsoft. If your phone is lost or stolen, or if you upgrade to a new phone, you can easily restore the contacts, calendar appointments, photos, and other information that you stored on My Phone to a compatible new or replacement phone. Most phones that run the Windows Mobile 6 operating system are compatible with My Phone service.

The opening of the beta was announced on the blog of the development of My Phone. The test version of the application for all users of Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 that have a Windows Live ID available, and supports 19 languages. My Phone sync contacts, photos, videos, messages, calendar items and other content on a smartphone with a behind a password protected account on the web. The service is similar to Mobile Me from Apple, though not for My Phone has to be paid.

Microsoft My Phone account gives you 200 MB of free storage on the Microsoft My Phone web site. If a synchronization would result in exceeding this limit, you will receive an error message on your phone and your account on the My Phone web site will only include information received prior to reaching this limit. Any files in excess of this limit will not be saved.

Microsoft does not charge a fee for the My Phone service at this time. But the data plan you have with your mobile operator may require you to pay data-transfer charges when you use the service.

The data can then other smart phones with Microsoft Mobile OS are retrieved. Microsoft is currently putting the finishing touches to Windows Mobile 6.5 and this version of the software is the My Phone service is already integrated. Windows Mobile 6.5 will come out after the summer, when the final version of My Phone for earlier versions of the operating system appears, is still unknown.

Good competitor is Sprite's Virtual Mobile. This software is in fact exactly the same, all your data backed up and managed on the web. Works with a pleasant interface and supports the push back of new SMS messages. You can empty your cellphone at a distance in case of theft. Another advantage is the (early beta) support for Symbian phones. This means that within the foreseeable future, all your personal data between Symbian and Windows Mobile phones can synchronize and manage online.
