According to section 1022.8 of the IBC and IFC, luminous floor safety signs that identify floor level, the total number of floors accessed by the exit enclosure, the availability of roof access and the floor level of the exit with a direction indicator must be mounted at each floor landing in public assembly, business, education, hospitality, medical and mercantile buildings. Assisted rescue area signs assist building occupants who are unable to traverse exit stairwells on their own. In the event of a fire, building occupants that need assistance evacuating can congregate in assisted rescue areas and be helped by firefighters or other building occupants. Running man signs contain a stick figure that exhibits a running motion along with a prominent arrow that tells building occupants which direction they should go once they reach an exit leading door: up, down, straight, to the left or to the right. Running man signs are considered emergency exit symbols.
