If you want to go buy some fitness equipment, there are thousands of products out there that will promise you quick weight loss and easy results. But do you really need any expensive gear to be able to lose weight?

One thing that many people don't realize is that what you eat is more likely to make you gain weight than a lack of exercise. The very first thing you should focus on if you want to lose weight is getting your diet under control.

I don't mean that you should adopt one of the popular fad diets, but just learn a bit about nutrition and what foods are actually healthy for your body. After you do that try to work on your portion control; eating less food at each meal, but more meals throughout the day.

Eating right obviously doesn't require special equipment. But what if you want to do something more?

You can actually get a very good workout at home with just a few dumbbells and your body weight. Doing body weight squats and other weight lifts at home can help you get a killer workout without spending thousand's on some special home gym.

Remember, to lose weight you need to first evaluate what you are putting into your body, then start working out. As long as your workouts are making you breathe hard and fatiguing your muscles, you really don't need much more than that.

There's a lot of exercises that you can do at home, but if you need ideas start with squats, standing rows, pushups, and dead lifts. You'll only need weights for 2 of those exercises, and a cheap set of dumbbells works just fine.
