Atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis affects a large percentage of the world's population. It's very common and often chronic. It's a skin condition in which the skin seems to experience a skin allergy or sensitivity. There is a known hereditary component in the condition and is often seen more in certain families.

The hallmarks of atopic eczema often include skin rashes and itching. Following is a full list of the common symptoms of the condition:

1. extreme itchiness of patches of skin

2. inflamed areas of the skin

3. redness in certain spots

4. swelling

5. cracking

6. weeping

7. crusting

8. scaling

One of the most common and indicative complaints is dry skin. It is often an underlying cause of some of the common rash symptoms. Atopic Eczema can afflict patients of any age, but is most often found in infants and younger children. Those who experience chronic atopic eczema may have periods of times (often referred to as flare ups) during which the condition is exacerbated.

Factors that can lead to flare ups include:

1. dry skin

2. seasonal allergies

3. exposure to harsh soaps and/or detergents

4. skin products (such as lotions or creams)

5. cold weather

Individuals experiencing symptoms of atopic eczema should consult a physician. Most patients can adequately manage their condition through proper skin care and lifestyle changes. In other instances more in depth treatment may be required. Other treatment methods that can be used include: corticosteroid creams and ointments, Tacrolimus (Protopic) and pimecrolimus (Elidel) ointments (immune modulators), Atopiclair and MimyX, Antibiotics, Phototherapy, Photochemotherapy, prednisone, etc.
